State Sen. Kip Bateman has introduced a resolution calling for a referendum on same-sex marriage. If he thinks that gets lawmakers off the hook from voting on the issue, he is sadly mistaken. Senate President Steve Sweeney says, "Not a chance in hell that bill is going anywhere. It's a cop-out." Next week the Senate and the Assembly have scheduled same-sex marriage votes. The Democrats say it is a civil rights issue and civil rights are not left to the whim of the majority at the ballot box.
